Meet Southern Leyte native Dr. Jhonel “AJ” M. Añavesa, a government employee, a dedicated educator and a passionate traveler who also achieved a feat many can only dream of, ticking off all 82 provinces of the Philippines. Currently serving as the Regional Chief of the Local Government Monitoring and Evaluation Division (LGMED) of DILG Region 8 in Tacloban City, 37 years old AJ is also a strong advocate of agri-tourism. His love for adventure, which blended with his sustainability goals, earned him a place among the honorees of the first Philippine Travel Masters Awards under PGE’s initiative.

Humble Beginnings

AJ’s travel story began in 2018 as a way to celebrate completing his PhD degree at the young age of 29. Initially, his goal was modest: visit 30 new places by age 30. After discovering the trending #Project82 challenge, his aspirations grew and his determination strengthened. Adhering to his personal mantra: “Explore, Experience, and Expand Life’s Horizons”, AJ wanted to see the Philippines before venturing abroad so he carefully planned adventures by solo backpacking or with organized travel groups. What started as a five-year plan extended to seven due to the pandemic, culminating in May 2024 with his final stop in the breathtaking province of Tawi-Tawi, the southernmost gem of the Philippines.

Local Economy Impact and Sustainability

AJ’s travels are deeply rooted in his passion for promoting sustainable and responsible tourism. As an Economics graduate, he understands the critical role tourism plays in strengthening local economies. During his trips, he made it a point to support local businesses—from souvenir shop owners to habal-habal drivers—and to highlight their importance in fostering sustainable development. Uniquely enough, AJ’s love for agriculture and chicken farming became an integral part of his travels. His thriving YouTube channel, Wandering Soul, featuring a one-of-a-kind content theme of travel vlogs and chicken farming tips, has attracted over 100,000 subscribers, earning him a Silver Play Button and recognition as one of the 12 Philippine winners of YouTube NextUp in 2021.

Home is where the Spirit of Adventure is

Though his home province, Southern Leyte, dubbed as the “Playground of Eastern Visayas”, stands out as his ultimate favorite, AJ has plenty of fond memories in all provinces. From conquering fears to learning new skills, the following were what stood out for him: discovering new techniques in chicken farming; having received a traditional tattoo from Apo Whang-Od in Kalinga and conquering adrenaline-fueled adventures like cliff jumping, zip lining, and paragliding in Sarangani and Bohol. AJ also went out exploring Mindanao solo with highlights of visiting “Ground Zero” in Marawi where he witnessed the people’s resilience and Zamboanga City for its Chavacano creole dialect and the harmonious blend of Islam and Christianity. For AJ, Palawan remains one of his most memorable destinations, a place where the natural beauty of the Philippines meets the spirit of discovery.
